Why Become Vegan?

By Laindha

Why do some people choose to go vegan? The question arises, because this way of life can seem complicated and limiting. Why, in fact, deprive ourselves of the foods we are used to consuming from birth?

People choose to go vegan for different reasons (and sometimes even for all of them):

Health: many do it for their health and to extend their life expectancy. Eating meat greatly increases the intake of saturated fat. Saturated fat is believed to be responsible in the long term for the development of several types of cancer and cardiovascular disease. As for fish and seafood, these can contain contaminants such as mercury, a heavy metal that the human body cannot evacuate, and which builds up in the body. In the long term, mercury can cause nervous system disruption. Scientific studies have shown that people who only consumed plant-based products had a lower body mass index, easier to control their weight, had more energy, better skin, and suffered less the little pains that are normally attributed to the aging process. Vegans generally have better overall health.

The environment: Unless we live on another planet, no one is unaware that our way of life causes enormous damage to the environment. Raising animals for slaughter uses a lot of water resources and a lot of space. The deforestation that is practiced on a global scale is often to make way for livestock, because the consumption of red meat is said to be on the rise in the world. In the Amazon rainforest of South America, nearly 80% of deforestation is due to the creation of spaces for cattle ranching. To produce a kilo of beef, you need 15,000 liters of water. To produce a kilogram of soybeans, you only need 2,000 liters of water. To produce a kilo of fruits and vegetables, between 500 and 1000 liters of water are needed. It is easy to see that consuming red meat regularly is a disaster for the world ecology. In addition, to advocate ecologically in favor of a vegan lifestyle, cosmetics and household cleaning products with a vegan composition are almost all organic and free of chemicals, in addition to being biodegradable. They are therefore much less toxic to the environment. And most importantly, they are not tested on animals.

Respect for animal life: unfortunately, the large-scale production of animals for human consumption often brings its share of abuse. The animals are most of the time gathered in intensive breeding environments, where promiscuity and living conditions are often questionable. The places can be unsanitary, and the lighting is mostly made of artificial light. Some animals rarely see the light of day, never feel the breeze of the wind on their bodies or the joy of being able to wander freely and frolic in a field. It also happens sometimes, unfortunately, to see animals mistreated and/or treated harshly by the workers who take care of them. This is especially true during transport to the slaughterhouse, where the poor animals are stressed, stuck on top of each other. They are pushed into dark and disturbing corridors, sometimes with electric sticks, under the cries of the attendants who want to end it as soon as possible. The animal rights organization Mercy for Animals, thanks to undercover agents, regularly reports unspeakable acts uncovered in certain breeding farms and in several slaughterhouses. Of course, not all breeders treat their animals badly, far from it. But factory farming often leads to abuses unworthy of our species, and we must be aware of this.

The transition to veganism comes with certain challenges. But these challenges can be stimulating and achievable! The health of the earth, and ours, is worth it! Most people can’t switch to a 100% vegan lifestyle all at once because it’s hard to give up the way they live. The ideal is to gently integrate these products into our daily lives. Very often, people who try the experience end up integrating this way of life completely, after seeing the benefits.

There is no right or wrong way to become vegan. Some people go vegan within weeks, months, or years, while others do overnight. The best is to go at your own pace and set achievable goals. Becoming vegan is an individual journey, where everyone does the best they can achieve their goals: better health for themselves, for the planet, and better respect for animals!

Find Your Organic Products on the web!

By Laindha

Sometimes, for all kinds of reasons, it is difficult to get the organic products you need. Some people live in remote villages with only one small grocery store, where the range of products and foods is limited. Or your favorite grocery stores, even if you live in a big city, do not have all the products you might want to buy. Maybe you do not have a car to go shopping. Maybe you have mobility difficulties? There are several reasons that can make it difficult to find products suited to our lifestyle choice, that is, to buy with the planet in mind.

Internet to the rescue!

Several businesses and companies offer online shopping and home delivery of organic products. Some offer prepared meals, or ready-to-cook boxes. Some agricultural producers deliver, sometimes to specific points in your city, on certain predetermined days, or sometimes even deliver to their homes for their regular subscribers.

Buying online on certain specialized sites makes it possible to discover and purchase rarer products, which are not available in your local stores. Because in addition to organic food, easy to find in any good grocery store, there is a whole range of specialty products that are made from organic ingredients, not harmful to the environment, and not treated on animals. Shampoos, conditioners, rejuvenating facial creams, various beauty products, makeup, many organic and cruelty-free products are easier to find on specialized websites. Would you like to maintain your home with more natural products, which do not constitute a danger to your health, free from harmful chemicals? You will find cleaning products for the home, for your clothes, natural body soaps, and more on the Web. Even your pets can eat organic, as there are natural and organic cat and dog foods available.

When choosing a supplier on the Internet to purchase your products, go to a reputable company, which provides a guarantee of prompt delivery, reliable orders, and a guarantee of quality. Some companies like Amazon offer products that can be rated by consumers. Suppliers are also evaluated, and to remain suppliers they must provide impeccable service. It is therefore easy to select quality products from reliable sources, appreciated by consumers.

You will find on our own site a section of vegan, organic, and not tested on animals’ products, according to our values! The supplier is Amazon: https://healthy.smart-shopping.net/

Each product having an extensive description, it will be easy for you to select those which also meet your own values. But no matter which shopping site you choose, the Internet can allow you to try, review, and discover products that otherwise would never have been available to you.

Happy shopping!

Organic Products: Discern the True From the False!

By Laindha

The decision to move away from consuming fully organic products that are less harmful to the environment is a very important one. To increase their consumer base, some popular brands have reoriented their marketing techniques to make their food appear both cheap and healthy. As organic has the wind in its sails, companies are obviously sniffing out the good deal. For the informed consumer, it is necessary to know how to discern the true from the false, in order not to be fooled by impostors.

You only have to look at the grocery store at the many products labeled as ‘Natural’, ‘Preservative Free’, ‘Made with Organic Ingredients’ to convince yourself that the industry is trying to adapt to the needs of consumers. These terms speak to people because they want to know what they are eating. The population is increasingly aware of the dangers of using certain preservatives and certain food manufacturing processes. However, since most consumers are still concerned about the cost of food, more than the nutritional value, organic food companies must compete strongly with popular brands to successfully market their products. People want to eat better, but the financial argument weighs heavily in the balance.

Compared to organic food companies, the traditional food industry uses preservatives to increase the shelf life of food. The product can thus stay longer on the supermarket shelves, and longer in the consumer’s fridge. Large companies also have more income to spend on advertising and marketing to expand their distribution area. These companies therefore have a clear advantage in reaching people. As a result, organic food companies are sometimes forced to distribute locally to reduce shipping costs and save time on shelf life. As a result, organic companies will distribute smaller quantities of products to different regions. Some brands of organic products may therefore not be found across the country. So, it becomes important to recognize organic brands that are offered in your own area in local stores.

If you have recently gone organic, some organic brands may be new to you. You know them less and that is okay. The easiest way to get to know them is to start shopping “organic” in specialized organic food stores. Since these stores only carry this type of product, you will not have to worry about reading labels and trying to figure out whether the list of ingredients is natural or not. Once you are familiar with the brands offered in these stores, you will be able to easily target them in a traditional grocery store, as they are sometimes also available there. A large percentage of grocery stores offer sections entirely dedicated to organic food.

When shopping at traditional stores, which do not specialize in organic products, but may offer organic, trust the certifications. Take the time to read food labels. Organic products produced in the United States will be labeled “USDA Certified Organic”.

Organic accredited products in the USA will display the following logo:

In Canada, « any food, seed or feed that is labeled “organic” on the label is regulated by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). Producers of these products must be able to demonstrate that the organic claims are true and not misleading and that all product specific requirements are met. All food sold in Canada must comply with the Food and Drugs Act and its regulations, as well as the Safe Food for Canadians Act and its regulations. » Source: https://www.inspection.gc.ca/produits-biologiques/reglementation/eng/1328082717777/1328082783032

Organic accredited products in Canada will display the following logo:

Organic accredited products in France may display the following logo:

It is important to take the time to read and know the ingredients of the products you buy. Ingredients with unpronounceable names and which contain food coloring should be avoided, as these ingredients are rarely found in nature. Some brands offer organic food, but not all are organic, so you need to read the ingredients carefully. For example, ’’Kashi ’’, offers a variety of products such as cereals and soft bars, many of which are organic. However, not all their products are 100% organic. Many companies that offer gluten-free products also use preservatives in their ingredients. So, rather than relying on brands, we must above all rely on the list of ingredients.

Let’s recap! Focus on finding a specialty health food store in your area, and find out what organic brands are available to you. Take the time to read the ingredient labels and get to know them. By using this technique, you can then ensure that the groceries you buy will be free from unnatural ingredients. If possible, buy local for your fruits and vegetables, it will reduce your carbon footprint, and you will encourage people in your area!

Eat Organic at a Reasonable Cost? Here are a few tips!

By Laindha

You have made the decision to switch to organic food, for the sake of the environment and your health. But sometimes, it can be more difficult to find them in the grocery store, the choice is more limited, and often, they are not affordable! Budgetary constraints can therefore make you doubt your convictions.

Here are some tips to help you persevere, and gently integrate this lifestyle into your daily life!

  • Take it slow: do not try to change everything in your lifestyle overnight. Inform yourself, read on the subject, look at the labels of the products you already buy. Look at what they contain as ingredients. Several of them may already be organic.
  • Watch for discounts: When you receive your grocery flyers, watch for discounts on products, including fruits and vegetables. Since organic products are more expensive in general, it is worth watching out for specials to get more for your money. If one-week, organic tomatoes are at a super discount, take the opportunity to buy more to do tomato-based recipes, for example lasagna, to freeze them for later. Canned food is convenient! Processing and freezing will save you big money!  Know the prices too. Do price checks for organic items purchased regularly. The price can vary a lot from place to place for the same product. Even from farm to farm, prices can vary a lot. Stores that sell only natural and organic foods also periodically make sales. Watch and shop!
  • Eating in restaurants regularly for work can put a strain on your budget. Try to prepare meals yourself, using good organic foods. Even just a day or two a week. It will save you big! Picnicking in the park at noon, while eating good food, is very good for the soul, it allows you to relax. Try to decrease your portions too. In general, we always eat a little too much!
  • Try to encourage local organic farmers. Many offer on-farm kiosks, and many offer a weekly fruit and vegetable basket program, delivered to your door, sometimes with seasonal produce of the producer’s choice. This will allow you to try new fruits and vegetables that you may never have tried. You will expand your food horizons! Remember that local purchases have a smaller ecological footprint than products from across the planet, even if these are organic.
  • To help you, in the United States, a tool allows you to find an organic producer near you: https://www.localharvest.org/

  • Products that are complicated to prepare are not always the best! Sometimes after a grueling day, a nice, simple sandwich with whole grain bread and organic peanut butter, with a little bit of fruit jelly, can work wonders in no time! Add an apple, and you have a complete and nutritious meal at minimal cost.
  • Buying wholesale always saves money. If you have friends or family with organic food enthusiasts, come together to negotiate prices with a local producer. If you guarantee him substantial purchases each week, he might be interested in giving you discounts.
  • Buy seasonal products saves money. For example, in the spring, it is the time for fiddleheads and asparagus. In June and July, the strawberries arrive, and later in august the corn. Rather than grabbing high priced exotic fruits from elsewhere, try to focus on local, seasonal fruits and vegetables. Your ecological footprint will be smaller!
  • Grow your own vegetable garden. If you have the possibility, this will allow you to reconnect with a relationship with the land that many have lost. You will have full control over what you eat. And you will find that a good tomato that you have grown yourself, or a good fresh cucumber taken from the plane, is much better!

By observing these few tips, eating organic without breaking the bank is possible. All it takes is a little time and good will! You will gain a lot in return: better health, and a lower carbon footprint!

Organic Food: Is it Really Worth it?

By Laindha

Media and social networks are no strangers to the fact that more and more people are opting for veganism and / or organic food. We are bombarded with distressing news about the environment. And we know more and more how certain animals are treated on factory farms: hens fattened with hormones to grow bigger, faster, crammed into henhouses that are often too small. Oxen whose growth is accelerated with feed enriched with antibiotics, which are intended to increase the profitability of industrial farms, without regard to animal welfare. The antibiotics and products these animals consume end up in the meat and eggs that we eat. Fruits and vegetables sprayed with fertilizers and chemical pesticides cannot help but retain some of these products once they reach our plate. Most people who buy organic products want assurance that food production is healthier, safer for the environment, purer and more natural.

What is organic food? According to the commonly accepted definition, ”organic” foods are defined as foods that are not treated with pesticides, sewage sludge, ionizing radiation, or bioengineering (GMOs, or genetically modified organisms). However, food manufacturers can use pesticides derived from a natural source in organic foods. There are terms to be careful of, such as ’hormone free’ or ’natural’, which are often not regulated by law in some countries.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has created an “organic” certification. Foods bearing the seal must be harvested, grown, and processed in accordance with national standards that include restrictions on the amounts of hormones, pesticide residues and antibiotics. These standards can be viewed here: https://www.usda.gov/topics/organic. In Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency also applies criteria to the use of names such as ”Organic”, ”Without hormones or antibiotics”, ”Natural”, ”Kosher” and others designations intended to inform the consumer. This information can be found here: https://www.inspection.gc.ca/food-label-requirements/labelling/industry/method-of-production-claims-on-food-labels/eng/1389379565794/1389380926083?chap = 0

Organic products: reality

A misconception about organic farming is that it does not use fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides. This is not always the case and even organic foods contain some form of fertilizer and pesticides (which are derived from natural products). Plant fertilizers, whether natural or chemical, are made up of the same three elements: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, and these three elements are used in both organic and regular agriculture. Fertilizer is essentially a chemical nutrient, and the organic version of fertilizer (manure) provides the same load of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium as synthetic to grow plants. Some argue that organic produce tastes better than regular produce. They are also said to contain more nutrients. What is it really? So, is organic REALLY healthier?

The organization Quality Low Input Food (QLIF) conducted a five-year study on this topic and concluded that organically grown foods generally contain a higher level of nutrients than conventionally grown foods. They also found that organic foods contain less “bad” levels of pesticides, but QLIF says more studies need to be done before conclusive and conclusive evidence can be provided. A 2007 study by the University of Newcastle in the UK reported that organic produce contained up to 40 percent higher levels of certain nutrients (vitamin C, iron, and zinc) than conventional foods. Another study, conducted in 2003 by the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, found that organically grown corn and berries contained 58% more antioxidants, known to help prevent heart disease. Organic fruits contained up to 52% higher levels of vitamin C compared to those grown conventionally.

So, is organic food worth it?

Some experts say that if you can afford them, why do without it? Whether or not to eat organic is really a personal choice. But when it comes to non-organic processed foods, how can anyone say that substances like chemical pesticides, capable of killing insects, can be good for us? Others argue that there is little or no evidence that organic foods are superior to traditional foods. They go on to say that food does not have to be organic to be safe and environmentally friendly and recommend that people focus on eating food close to home, rather than on it. ‘they are from organic farming or not. Food can be organic, but if it has traveled half the planet before it reaches us, it leaves a much larger carbon footprint than traditional food that comes from next door. If people buy food from local farmers’ market, whether organic or not, there is much less impact on the environment. The ultimate is therefore to consume organic food from nearby farms.

However, many people simply cannot afford to buy organic foods because of the higher cost. What is important is to eat a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Always wash your fruits and vegetables well before eating them, regardless of whether they are organic or not, as this will help remove any residue. He even sells soaps specially designed for washing fruits and vegetables. The health benefits of eating healthy foods usually outweigh the disadvantages of pesticides if they are not organic fruits or vegetables. But when you have the choice, it is better to choose what is best for your health and the planet: organic!

Taking Care of the Earth is Good for the Soul!

By Laindha

Organic food does not only have a physical effect on the health of the body. It also has a strong mental and emotional impact. Eating a natural diet, free of chemicals, brings you closer to nature. When you choose to eat foods that are produced with the least possible damage to the environment, it says a lot about you. This underlines a certain sensitivity to nature, to animals, and to the sustainability of the human species.

Eating organic can bring some peace of mind, knowing that you are trying to harm the planet as little as possible. You are at peace with Mother Nature because you do not encourage those who abuse her. As a thank you, she will keep you healthy with the organic foods she gives you. Because the reverse is true: by eating conventional foods, obtained from chemical fertilizers and pesticides, it cannot help but find a little of it in your diet. Fruits and vegetables obtained through industrial agriculture are often accompanied by toxic residues that are hazardous to health. Especially if the intake accumulates with age.

The two common reasons people switch to rganic food are first and foremost for health and the environment. On the health side, products from organic farms have, according to some research, high levels of phytochemicals and antioxidants that are much higher than those found in traditional products. They are also free from the toxic elements and chemical residues that are common in products from industrial agriculture. We can therefore say that unrefined foods contain more vitamins and nutrients, and at the same time fewer heavy metals and harmful residues for health. The superiority of the nutrient content of organic foods comes from the use of natural fertilizers, such as manure. Chemicals commonly found in industrial fertilizers as well as in commercial pesticides dramatically dampen the ability of plants to produce phytochemicals as well as antioxidants. Industrial synthetics unfortunately reduce the need for plants to produce extracts that will help them absorb nutrients and fight pests and diseases. An organically grown plant therefore develops a better defense against these pests and diseases. Since industrial agriculture depletes the soil by destroying nutrients with chemicals, the consequence is that as plants grow in the soil, nutrients are depleted until the land becomes almost infertile. Sometimes the soil even becomes unsuitable for agriculture.

If you choose to eat organic, a great accomplishment is producing your own little garden. Growing your own organic food can bring you so much closer to nature. By gardening, we develop respect for the land, we try not to intoxicate it. We get great satisfaction from seeing what we have sown, watered, and maintained grow. You risk becoming attached to Mother Nature, by tilling the soil yourself, removing weeds manually, and using natural fertilizers like manure. Many people have only experienced buying fruits and vegetables in grocery stores. Growing your own vegetable garden with your children helps to teach toddlers where the food they eat comes from. They become much better citizens, who will not take nature for granted. When it is finally time to harvest, you will fully realize how nature provides for those who care for it. Some doctors and psychologists even consider gardening to be a calming activity for the mind. Gardening is a calming hobby that changes ideas and greatly reduces stress.

A saying goes: you are what you eat! To stay in shape and live a long, healthy life, it is therefore more than desirable to go organic! Not just for you, but for the earth too!
