Are the Benefits of Organic Food Overrated?

The followers of organic food are convinced of the real superiority of organic food. On the other hand, there are those who find organic food overpriced and too expensive compared to food from modern and industrial agriculture. They claim that common foods are just as healthy as any other. Who is telling the truth? Since organic food is 10 to 30 percent more expensive than other foods, this issue has an impact on people’s wallets. Common people wonder why they should pay more if it turns out to be the same.

For a bit of history, it must be remembered that modern agriculture has evolved very rapidly over the past 40 years. Before the 1940s, non-organic food did not exist. Today, most of the food bought in supermarkets is not organic. Helping research and development technologies, new fertilizers, new insect control products, and new land management techniques have taken productivity leaps and bounds. One hectare of modern cultivated land produces much more than land of yesteryear. The difference is that organically grown food is produced using so-called ‘old-fashioned’ farming methods.

Here are the particularities of organic farming:

  • Organic farmers use natural fertilizers like manure. Non-organic farmers use chemical fertilizers, which are generally more efficient and less “odorous” to neighbors.
  • Organic farmers fight weeds by using more natural products, derived from compounds that are naturally found in the environment. Non-organic farmers use synthetic herbicides to get rid of weeds.
  • Organic and non-organic farmers must both rotate crops, and periodically plow the land.
  • The organic farmer can add mulch to cover the soil. This prevents wind erosion and the leaching of the land by runoff and rain.
  • Organic farmers use natural pesticides or ’pest’ predatory insects to control insects and disease. For growing corn, for example, we use trichogrammatid, small insects, to control the European corn borer, a pest worm that is not very pleasant to find on the cob. Non-organic farmers use synthetic insecticides.
  • Unlike non-organic foods, organic food products do not contain MSG, artificial additives and sweeteners, preservatives, processing aids, added colors and flavors. Be aware that colors and flavors are often added to non-organic mass-produced foods to make them look and taste better.

Environmental and health benefits

  • Environmentalists argue that organic farming benefits the environment. This type of agriculture preserves our water supply by not contaminating it with chemicals. It preserves our soil and reduces pollution.
  • Those who choose organic foods over non-organic foods say that these foods are not only more nutritious, but also tastier. Trying both is the best way to get a feel for it.
  • At the nutritional level, some studies indicate that foods produced in both ways are almost equivalent, with a slight advantage to organic products. Many factors can influence the nutritional value of food: the climate, the soil, the nutrients found there, the variety of the plant, the amount of sun and water received. It seems that these factors are even more important whether to grow organically.
  • Not surprisingly, lower levels of pesticides are found in organic foods. Even in the United States, the USDA (United State Department of Agriculture) admits that organically grown produce contains significantly less pesticide residue than regular produce. According to experts, however, the levels of residual pesticides in ordinary fruits and vegetables are found in such small amounts that it is negligible for health.

However, the same could not be said of the impacts on the health of farmers. Modern farmers are exposed to greater doses of harmful products, and at much higher frequencies than consumers. Contact with pesticides for farmers is believed to be associated with health problems such as Parkinson’s disease, birth defects and miscarriages.

  • Antioxidants: As organic foods are not sprayed with chemical pesticides, some experts claim that these foods contain more antioxidants, to protect against pests.
  • Vitamin C: Studies also show that organic foods contain more vitamin C, necessary for human health. For example, organically grown oranges provide 30 percent more vitamin C than non-organic oranges, according to a study conducted by the University of Missouri.
  • Foods from organic farming are said to contain about 29 percent more magnesium, 21 percent more iron, 13 percent more phosphorus, and 18 percent more polyphenols. Polyphenols protect the body against allergies, arthritis, heart disease, and cancer, among others.

To resume, the major downside to switching to organically grown food is that you will spend 10-30% more on your grocery budget. However, these disadvantages may be outweighed by your health. And that of the people who produce your food! At the environmental level, organic farming respects the land and its resources more. Compared to traditional agriculture, organic agriculture pollutes water and soil less and produces less greenhouse gases. Considering the dire condition of the planet now, this alone would be enough to encourage organic production! Eating organic significantly reduces your ecological footprint, especially if you buy from local producers. If more and more people choose foods produced with respect for the planet, the health of the earth, and that of its inhabitants, will be better for it!

Organic food is on the rise right now. Human beings are more and more aware that their way of life has a significant impact on the environment. And by ricochet on his health! People want to know what they eat and drink, and rightly, organic food fulfills a basic need for a return to a healthier lifestyle, for oneself and for the earth that nourishes us. As the world’s population grows, we always want to make more money with every bit of arable land, but at what cost? The demand for organic products is constantly growing around the world, and it is not for nothing!

What’s wrong with modern industrial agriculture?

Industrial agriculture involves the use of many chemicals and synthetics, which are toxic and harmful to the environment. These products are used to maximize the yield per hectare of production while reducing the proliferation of insects. But this yield comes at a price. Chemicals (fertilizers, pesticides) pollute the soil, killing the natural microorganisms that live there by depriving them of their nutrients. These products end up spilling into our waterways with the rain, also causing the death of other microorganisms, also causing the proliferation of new invasive species, such as algae, which end up asphyxiating our lakes and rivers. These products can also be found in the air, for example when watering the land with pesticides, to limit the proliferation of pests harmful to crops. Pesticide residues can therefore be found in our food. With modern large-scale industrial agriculture, the relationship to the land is changed, as yield is the priority. Feed as many people as possible, and therefore make as much money as possible, with every hectare. The land ends up being depleted of this constant demand for yield. Organic agriculture was developed with the aim of better preserving the planet. Quite the opposite of industrial agriculture.

What is organic food?

A food qualified as organic aims to support the sustainability of the human body and the environment, through food production that does not have a negative impact on this environment. “Organic” is therefore a term used to describe foods produced and processed in a way that does not harm the environment. There are very strict regulations that must be followed for a farm to qualify as organic. There are severe and difficult qualifications to obtain before a producer can get the title of organic, and thus obtain the right to label his products as such. Chemicals are prohibited, and the management of parasitic insects must be done naturally. Of course, the yield per hectare is reduced, which explains why these products are more expensive. Soil for organic production must first be free from chemicals or synthetic substances for at least several years (usually two years), before any production is undertaken. Then the processes used in production are strictly controlled. No pesticides or artificial fertilizers should be used on crops, and no growth hormones or periodic antibiotics should be given to livestock whose manure will enrich the soil.

What about genetically modified organisms in all of this?

Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, are plants or animals that have been subjected to genetic engineering to apply specific modifications to their DNA. This cutting-edge technique is used to create genetically modified species to meet specific needs, for example to ward off certain insects, to make the plant grow faster, or to acquire certain characteristics intended to increase profitability. GMOs are not tolerated in organic farming. We use what nature has given us, period. Genetic engineering is still a new science and it has not yet been established that the consumption of GMOs does not have harmful effects on humans in the long term.

More and more certified organic farms are emerging. The increased supply has significantly improved the accessibility and availability of products. There are now organic wines, organic meat, and even organic household cleaning products. Growing awareness of the harmful effects of conventional processed foods has caused a surge in demand for healthier products. The demand is even higher than the supply. People are willing to pay more for quality products that are better for health and for the environment. The industry therefore has every advantage in taking this into account!

Tips and Advice to Keep Your Organic Fruits and Vegetables for Longer!

Some people mention that organic fruits and vegetables keep longer. Is this true and why?

Organic foods and foods from industrial agriculture are not grown in the same way. Organic farming is regulated. It is closer to the methods of traditional cultures. In organic fruits and vegetables, no pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic chemical fertilizers are used. Sewage sludge is not allowed nor irradiation, and food is not genetically modified. The organic farmer works with what the earth and nature can give him. There are many nutrients in the soil, and the organic, earth-loving farmer knows it is important not to destroy them with artificial chemical herbicides and pesticides. The soil is alive, and it must remain so! Plants are like humans; they are what they eat! If they are fed with natural and healthy nutrients, it can only result in a healthy and vibrant plant. If the soil contains more nutrients, the plant will use them, it will be healthier and last longer.

This reflection represents a major difference between the two cultivation methods. Industrial farming methods often leave the soil severely depleted of nutrients, making plants vulnerable and susceptible to pests and diseases. However, organic fruits and vegetables do not defy the cycle of life! They have a better start in life, sure, but they’re not immune to rot. How to store your food is very important!

  • Buy tomatoes still on their vine if possible. They will last longer. Tomatoes lose their flavor and juicy texture in the fridge. So, leave them on the kitchen counter. To not lose them, buy less at a time.
  • Choose bananas that are about to be ripe, with some green left. But not entirely green. Leave them together on the bunch, do not separate them, they will last longer. Bananas will blacken in the fridge. Leave them on the counter. Like tomatoes, don’t buy too many at once, as they unfortunately all ripen together!
  • Wash your red fruits (strawberries, raspberries) with one-part vinegar to 3 parts water before putting them in the fridge, they will keep longer.
  • Wrap your celery in aluminum foil.
  • Herbs are like flowers: store your bouquet in a glass of water on the edge of a window, and use only what you need each day. When the herbs start to wither, chop them, put them in a bag, and pour olive oil on them. Then put in the freezer for future use.
  • The mushrooms will keep longer in a paper bag.
  • Avocados ripen best at room temperature, on the edge of a window. If you have a lot of them, if they are well ripe, then store them in the fridge so you do not lose them.
  • The onions can be stored in a dark and dry place, locked in a sticky stocking to which you will have made a knot between each onion.
  • Keep raisins in an airtight container, such as a Tupperware container.
  • To give your salad leaves some extra pep, immerse them in ice water a few minutes before preparing them. They will be crunchier!
  • It is best to store apples in the fridge, in a plastic bag, away from other fruits and vegetables, as they produce a gas called ethylene, which is harmful to other fruits and vegetables. Exception: they get along well with potatoes! These love ethylene, and they’ll keep longer if you put an apple in your potato sack.

Buy the healthiest vegetables possible in the grocery store because they are said to be the healthiest, most lively, and most nutritious. If you can buy your daily fresh vegetables and fruits directly from the producer, that is even better! If you can afford it, encourage organic producers. For your health, and that of the earth!
